Do I or any candidates require an electrical background ? No not at all. A basic electrical knowledge may be beneficial. Are courses are designed for the novice and the experienced test engineer requiring a refresher. We aim for all candidates to feel competent to carry out testing when we leave.

Will I legally be able to carry out testing after the course? Current regulations state that a competent person should carry out portable appliance testing. After successful completion of our pat training course you may carry out portable appliance testing. Our courses are very in depth and they are based around IEE regulations. Candidates feel confident and competent to carry out portable appliance testing after attending our course. All candidates will receive a certificate of competency after successful completion of the PAT course.

What testing equipment do you bring along on the day ? We train on testing equipment from the leading manufacturers and provide guidance on Earth bond testing, insulation testing, earth leakage testing and load / function tests. Alternatively just bring or provide your own tester and be trained on that if you wish.

What materials will you provide ? All candidates will receive a detailed training booklet which provides guidance on user checks, formal visual inspections, combined inspection and test, appliance classes and correct ways to identify classes of appliance, different types of equipment, correct re test frequencies, fuse ratings, flex ratings and identification, earth bond testing, earth continuity testing, insulation tests, leakage tests, load and function tests, earth bond calculations, polarity tests, the law including electricity at work regulations and the provision of use of work equipment regulations, correct methods of recording information and much more.

Will lunch and will parking be provided ? Tea and coffee is provided throughout the day with light refreshments. For lunch a buffet but more frequently restaurant lunch will be provided at the venue you are visiting. Vegetarians are catered for just inform our advisor when booking your course. Parking is always provided free and included in the cost of the course.

What are the timings for the course ?

  • 9:15 - Course start and introductions
  • 9:30 - Theory session covering risks of electric shock, visual inspections, identifying different class of appliance and types of equipment along with frequency of inspections
  • 11:00 - Break for refreshments
  • 11:20 - Continuation of theory session with in depth session on appliance classes and the required tests, understanding tests and test values, recording values along with fuse ratings and much more
  • 12:30 - Break for lunch
  • 13:00 - In depth practical session where candidates will learn the correct ways to inspect plug tops and appliance flex's along with a in depth practical session using portable appliance testing equipment
  • 16:00 - Practical session closes and candidates will be required to show competence in the inspection of plug tops and appliance flex's and also testing of electrical appliances.
